Art and science are two methods humans use to understand the world around us. While we classify them as two different disciplines, they are intimately connected, particularly through the use of observation.

Participants will engage in a variety of experiences on the island including; birding, boating/snorkeling, land trips, and wood carving demonstration with local artisan Henry Wallace to learn how observational skills can influence art and science.

Instructors

Kate Lochridge

Caitlin Morganson

Kate Lochridge - earned a dual major in Studio Art and Marine Biology from Bowling Green State University in 2023. Since graduating, she has travelled across North America and shared her love for the natural world through artistic and scientific outlets, including as an environmental educator at Forfar from 2023 to 2024. Now, Kate creates art that advocates for cultures and ecosystems that we do not normally see in our day-to-day lives. Her artwork also increases opportunities to learn about science to encourage a sense of wonder and curiosity. Some pieces of note include “The HABs and the HAB Not’s”, “Between Land and Water: Visualizing Sea Level Change in South Central Alaska”, and the downtown Bowling Green “Artlet”.

She is currently working on several other projects, including a SCUBA site guide to Sitka, Alaska and as the lead artist for Ohio SeaGrant Project “Resolving potential toxicities of plastic leachates on multiple trophic levels in Lake Erie Ecosystem”. When people see her work, Kate hopes they gain the tools they need to drive social and environmental change in their own communities. *Kate Portfolio

Caitlin Morganson - After graduating from the University of Alberta with an honours degree in Animal Biology in 2021, Caitlin has been travelling across the world, learning about different cultures and wildlife. She has worked as a research assistant and an animal care technician, deepening her commitment to the conservation of all wildlife. She met Kate in 2023 at Forfar and have been great friends since. As a self taught artist, she has experimented with all sorts of materials and techniques, including making her own watercolour paints from rocks and shells and paintbrushes from sticks and feathers.

She currently is working on wearable art pieces. Her art is inspired by the places, cultures and animals in the places she has been to spark conversations and discussions of our own roles in conservation. *Caitlin Portfolio
